THE DIOLKOS AND THE PLANS AND ROUTE OF THE CANAL

Let us examine the maps and plans shown below, which may be considered basic to an understanding of the probable route of the Diolkos.

Map 1:

This was compiled and drawn by Bela Gerster. It shows the area of land around the Isthmus, with contour lines at intervals of 10m. It also depicts the spoil banks of Nero’s trench and their locations along with the Hexamilion Wall.

Map 2:

A plan of the Isthmus showing the canal with the twin towns of Poseidonia and Isthmia at its ends, along with the Athens-Corinth railway line (S.P.A.P.) and the railway line planned between the two settlements, and also the Hexamilion Wall and the road which led from Corinth to the canal, between the 4th and 5thkm of the latter, where the Athens-Corinth National highway was later built.

 Plan – cross section 3 :

This shows a longitudinal section along the canal route. On the X (horizontal) axis are plotted the kilometer marks and the distances from the beginning, and on the Y (vertical) axis the ground elevations [with a considerable vertical exaggeration]. This cross section is made up of longitudinal inclinations from one cut (section) to another, that is, the inclination (in %) every 100m.

Plan 4:

A topographic map of the canal, with the surrounding area on both sides, showing the twin towns of Poseidona and Isthmia, the contour lines and two bridges: the road bridge at a distance of 2.5km from the west end of the canal, and the railway bridge at about 4.5km from the same point.

The following comments can be made on the basis of the above plans:

The spoils from Nero’s excavation have been deposited parallel to and along the canal, for about half its length (about 3km). They would certainly not have been dumped upon the Diolkos, if only because it was in use for many years after Nero. In the digging of the Isthmus that was carried out on his orders, spoil banks were produced and deposited as already mentioned, parallel to the canal.

Wherever these spoil banks met the Diolkos, they left gaps for its passage. Consequently the Diolkos would not have followed a route near the canal, but at some distance from it, on one side or the other. This view is supported also by Plan (Section) 3, where the ground slopes are shown on the section along the canal. These are sharp and would not permit the ascent or descent of cargoes or ships on carriages over the Diolkos, if the latter followed the ground relief along the axis of the canal or even near and parallel to it.

The Hexamilion Wall would constitute a barrier to the course of the Diolkos, yet it remained in use for many centuries after the building of this Wall. Consequently the Diolkos must have been located east of the Hexamilion, which would not have intersected it. Moreover the archaeological excavations, present and past, in the Sanctuary of Poseidon have failed to reveal a single trace of the Diolkos. To be sure the sanctuary was located west of the Hexamilion Wall, whereas the Diolkos was east of it. Thus one can exclude any change in location or course of the Diolkos after the building of the Hexamilion wall from its west to east.

If we look closely at Map 2 and especially the route of the Transisthmian railway line, we can see that it is not a straight line, but follows a longer course with curved portions. It may be here that on higher ground above this line there could have been small tracks for railed cars, steam or horse-powered. This is because it follows a line with a longitudinal inclination of up to 1.5%. The initial and terminal sections of the railway line show the approximately corresponding courses which the Diolkos could have had.

Map 1 show that, among other things, the gullies in the ground are confined to the south part of the Isthmus area and especially to the vicinity of Kyras Vrysi. Here, too, we find the large gully that receives water from the three smaller ones. It is logical to suppose that the Diolkos’ route was away from these gullies. Otherwise engineering works would have been required; these would have been costly and difficult, such as bridges, supporting and retaining walls, earth banks and others, that is, structures that would have required maintenance and repairs during the whole time of their operation.

It is very hard to maintain large engineering works in continuous use for a long time. This would have been even truer in the case of the Diolkos, which in intervals of high economic activity would have been impossible to maintain, with its resulting collapse, at least in part, and so its use would have ceased for some time. But the history of the Diolkos and the historical documents indicate its continuing use. The historical epochs for which use of the Diolkos is not recorded were not periods of commercial flourishing of the city of Corinth and consequently did not make for the building of engineering works on parts of the Diolkos, such as bridges, large retaining walls or sharp alterations of the substrate, which would have demanded continuing maintenance, that was not possible throughout the life of the Diolkos.

Plan 3 (longitudinal section) shows that a route of the Diolkos along the opened canal (ca 1890) and over its width must have been impossible. In such a case the Diolkos would have been destroyed entirely by the digging of the canal, apart from the surviving western part of the Isthmus by the Gulf of Corinth.

If we suppose something like this, beyond its known termination at its west end, the Diolkos must have had a corresponding form at its eastern termination. And this is because, owing to the sharp inclination of the ground toward the Saronic Gulf, the Diolkos would not have ended at the present mouth of the canal on that gulf, but would have made a detour east, toward Kalamaki, for which there is to be sure, historical evidence. Then the middle part of the Diolkos’ route in as-much-as it was within the canal’s trench, about 100m wide, would necessarily have followed the slope of the natural ground. This however, seems almost impossible, because of the steep slopes of the ground in the center of the Isthmus, inclinations exceeding 5%, which prohibit the easy movement of ships and cargoes, as can be seen from Plan 3.

But we must also exclude the location of the Diolkos in places where the spoil banks from Nero’s excavation were deposited, on both sides of the canal. These border a width of about 200m.

The terminus of the Diolkos may have been perpendicular to the shore of the Saronic Gulf. This place however has not been located on the shore of Kalamaki, according to the information in J.G. Fraser (1917).

Here, too, there would have been an inclined platform (slipway) where the ships’ hulls would have been directly hauled out from or launched into the sea. Such a ramp would have greatly facilitated the loading and unloading of the hulls on to or off from the carriage trucks. In this case there would have no need to turn the hulls through 90° so as to place them on the Diolkos, as happened at the Gulf of Corinth end.
